About

Welcome to my creative world at Modern Medieval Press! My journey has been filled with a deep passion for art and a winding path that has led me to this incredible point in my artistic career.

From a young age, I was captivated by the medieval era. Whether it was visiting Renaissance fairs or immersing myself in movies inspired by the time period, I felt a magnetic pull towards its enchanting allure. It was during a study-abroad program in Ireland, surrounded by ancient castles and churches, that my fascination was reignited. The intricate artistry found in stained glass windows and the ornate encaustic tiles adorning church floors left an indelible impression on me.

Intaglio printmaking, a technique that has been cherished since the 1400s, perfectly complements my deep-rooted love for medieval art, techniques, and architecture. The process itself is a labor of dedication and precision. It starts with etching the design onto a plate, followed by inking the plate and placing it on a printing bed. With the weight of the rollers and careful pressure, the ink is transferred onto the waiting paper. In some cases, I enhance the prints with delicate watercolor touches, adding another layer of depth and beauty.

Throughout my artistic journey, I have explored various designs inspired by medieval tile patterns and the intricate details of stained glass masterpieces. These collections continue to evolve as I discover new wellsprings of inspiration. Currently, I am excitedly working on a new series that delves into the realm of mythical creatures, eager to see the magic come to life on paper.

One aspect that surprises many is the amount of time invested in creating a single printing plate. The meticulous etching process alone can take up to 10 hours for smaller plates, highlighting the intricacy and devotion poured into each piece.

What I adore most about what I do is the ability to immerse myself in the intricacy and detail of these prints. It feels as though I am bridging the gap between past and present, paying homage to the artists who came before me by honoring their techniques.

As a night owl, I find solace in my studio, surrounded by the melodies of my favorite movie soundtracks. The enchanting compositions from "Lord of the Rings," "Game of Thrones," "Harry Potter," "Outlander," "Braveheart," and more, transport me to realms of inspiration while I work.

There is no greater joy than the moment I pull a fresh print off the press for the first time. It's a blend of exhilaration and anticipation, as I witness the transformation from ink and plate to a tangible piece of art.

Thank you for joining me on this artistic journey, where the medieval and the modern intertwine to create captivating works that celebrate the beauty of the past and ignite the imagination of the present.
